Statements by Francesco Farioli after FC Porto 4-1 FC Famalicão

FC Porto qualified for the Quarter-finals of the Portuguese Cup after beating FC Famalicão (4-1) at home, and Francesco Farioli said he was “happy with the result” and with the “solid performance” of a team that, “despite conceding a goal from a set piece”, “deserved to win because they played well against an opponent that played very well”. In the aftermath of “a night with a spectacular atmosphere”, the Italian coach took the opportunity to thank “the people who came to the stadium and created a fantastic atmosphere”: “We are very happy with the support the fans give us”.

A deserved triumph
“I think it was a fair victory. We deserved to win, we played well against an opponent who played very well, especially in the first half. We put in a very solid performance, I was disappointed that we conceded a goal from a set piece, we could have done better, but I'm happy with the result.”

Diogo Costa in goal
“The starting position is not guaranteed, we assess it game by game, according to our needs. We have three great goalkeepers. Diogo is our number one, but both Cláudio Ramos and João Costa play an important role in the team. João Costa is having a good season with the B team and is one of the team’s leaders.”

Classic on the horizon
“Before that, we still have a league match on Monday.”

The power of the stands
“Winning is always good. Tonight, the atmosphere was spectacular, even though the stadium wasn't full. People came to the stadium even in this weather and created a fantastic atmosphere. In the last 10 minutes, the stadium was on fire. We are very happy with the support
the fans give us.”

2025 in retrospect
“We still have games this year. Then we'll think about 2026.”

Everyone matters
“Everyone is important, we have to keep everyone at a high level. Today we saw that if we ease off the pressure a little, no individual names make the difference. We have to be at our best for the individuals to help us win. We need to have strength in our legs and the right mentality on the pitch.”

Francisco Moura
“I think he's fine, it was a big blow, but I hope he'll be okay.”

Kiwior on the left
“It's a possibility. I don't think it's a test, because Kiwior has played in that position many times when he was at Arsenal and has proven that he can cover several positions. He's an intelligent player and can play in several positions.”

United dressing room
“That goal was very important for Pepê. He has played some great games recently, plays hard for the team, runs a lot, recovers balls, has great defensive qualities and plays with a lot of intensity. Despite all this, we mustn't forget that he is a winger and has a lot of talent, so he needs to score and assist. He was waiting for that moment. We could feel his excitement when he scored again. In the last game, I asked him to take the penalties, but he respected the hierarchy and let Samu take them, so scoring today gave him a feeling of liberation. We celebrated a lot because he is an incredible person and deserved this goal.”

The state of refereeing
“What is happening is very disappointing. I would like to say many things, but I prefer to keep them to myself. The images are clear, very clear, maybe there was no coverage because they were focused on another channel and in another place. My silence speaks louder than any words.”

Pepê
“He hadn't scored for a long time and was going crazy. I had already told him that if there was a penalty, I wanted him to take it, but in the last game we had a penalty in our favour and he respected the hierarchy and gave the ball to Samu. He always puts the team first, his effort is always special, he has a lot of talent and quality. The way the team, the bench and the fans celebrated his goal says a lot about how much we like him.”

Victor Froholdt
“We are managing his effort. We know he is the player with the most minutes on the pitch, but he has also been left out of some games. I believe it is important to have the whole squad with the right energy. His battery lasts longer than normal people's, and I think he's fine. We have been managing his effort during training sessions and are keeping an eye on his physical condition. We mustn't forget that he is young and can still improve. We are trying to get him to his maximum and are happy with his margin for progress.”

Controversial decisions
“It wasn't the first time this has happened. I'm speechless. The footage speaks for irself and couldn't be clearer. There wasn’t even a need for higher clarification, perhaps they were busy watching another channel. The last time a game lasted this long was in 1958. History repeats itself.”

50 goals, 18 from set pieces
“Sometimes we concede, sometimes we score. Set pieces are key in modern football, especially in the type of games we usually play, not that this was the case today, but we usually face opponents who drop back and we end up with more corners and free kicks. We have a staff that is very committed to creating danger from set pieces and a team that tries everything to score.”

The performance of the refereeing team
“The game only ended half an hour ago. I'm good at turning the page, but I still feel some adrenaline. I don't want to talk about the refereeing.”

Prpić starting in Alverca?
“He’s a centre defender, so he’s an option for the next game.”

Samu
“He has scored several goals in recent games and I hope he scores even more. I think he felt a ‘click’ and began to understand very well what the coaching staff wants. Goals have always been his speciality, the only thing he is doing differently is the way he works for the team. He is improving a lot in his first touch, showing his ability to link up play, he is more developed defensively and works hard for his teammates. I believe that when you do so many things well, the goals will eventually come, because the opportunities will also come. He is growing and that is a big advantage.”
