Spanish international scored twice against AFS (2-0) in the last match of the calendar year
FC Porto bid farewell to 2025 with a 2-0 win over AFS, thanks to Samu, who has scored eight goals in the last six games and eleven in the Portuguese League. With the penultimate round of the first turn of the season now complete, FC Porto leads the league with 15 wins and one tie, 35 goals scored and four conceded, five points ahead of Sporting and ten ahead of Benfica.
With Jan Bednarek, Francisco Moura, and William Gomes returning to replace Aberto Costa, Alan Varela, and Borja Sainz, banned, in comparison to the match in Alverca, the Dragons had their first shot on goal in the 11th minute - Rodrigo Mora tried from long range - and their second in the 12th - Samu shot from outside the area at goalkeeper Rafael Bertelli - and for the third time in the 13th minute - William Gomes missed the target with a cross shot.
Just before the half-hour mark, Pepê crossed and Victor Froholdt had the best chance of the opening half, but the Danish midfielder's header ended up in the visiting goalkeeper's gloves. Cláudio Ramos replaced the injured Diogo Costa during the break, and the tie lasted only two more minutes, as Samu did some great work inside the area, turning, dribbling, and shooting into the back of the south goal (1-0).
The next play would have swept Europe off its feet if it had resulted in a goal: Pepê and Mora combined, the Brazilian international outran every opponent in his path, the 18-year-old prodigy pulled several rabbits out of his hat, and the number 11 narrowly missed the target. Having just come on with Ángel Alarcón to replace Mora and William Gomes, Gabri Veiga was fouled in the penalty area and VAR called referee Bruno Costa to look at the footage.
After reviewing the images, the referee pointed to the penalty spot and Samu took the classic penalty kick - ball to one side and goalkeeper to the other (2-0). Alan Varela replaced Francisco Moura to prevent the left-footed player from receiving his fifth yellow card, Pablo Rosario dropped back to the centre of defence, and Jakub Kiwior moved to the left side. Near the final whistle, Martim Fernandes came off, Alberto Costa came on, and Estádio do Dragão rose to applaud Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa in the 88th minute, the day after the President of Presidents would celebrate his 88th birthday.
