FC Porto and FC Viktoria Plzeň tied (1-1) in the 7th matchday of the Europa League
FC Porto travelled to the Czech Republic and tied with FC Viktoria Plzeň (1-1) in the seventh matchday of the Europa League. The Dragons will start the last matchday of the league stage with 14 points. Deniz Gül scored FC Porto's only goal at Stadion města Plzně, where Francesco Farioli's men secured their place in the competition.
With four changes to the starting eleven that had lined up in Guimarães, the Dragons went in search of the opponent's goal and Borja Sainz forced goalkeeper Wiegele to a save (3m), but the home team opened the scoreboard shortly after with a shot from the edge of the area by Lukas Cerv (1-0). The response to the goal came from the blue and white Spanish winger who, receiving the ball from William Gomes, forced the Austrian goalkeeper into a save in the 18th minute.
A header from Samu (35m) tested Viktoria Plzeň again, who were reduced to ten men just before halftime. From a corner taken by Rodrigo Mora on the left, Kiwior headed towards the near post and Vydra used his arm to prevent the equalizer. Called to check the footage by VAR Michael Fabbri, referee Andris Treimanis showed the Czech captain a red card and pointed to the penalty spot, but Samu failed to hit the target.
Behind on the scoreboard but with one more man on the pitch, the blue and whites returned with Pepê replacing Borja Sainz. Francisco Moura and Gabri Veiga replaced Rodrigo Mora and Alberto Costa in the 56th minute, and Pablo Rosario's powerful shot was the most dangerous move until Martim Fernandes and William Gomes were replaced by Alan Varela and Deniz Gül (70m).
The Turkish international striker was in the spotlight in the 79th minute when, after a pass from Pepê, he came close to the tie just before falling in the area after contact with Lukas Cerv, which led to protests on the field and on the bench, but without consequences. Francisco Moura scored (85m), but the goal was promptly disallowed for a handball by Samu. At a time when the Dragons lurked the opponent's goal, Deniz Gül received a pass from Jakub Kiwior inside the area and fired into the net, salvaging a point in the 90th minute (1-1).
