Jan Bednarek believes FC Porto could have come away from Plzeň with three points (1-1)
FC Porto tied 1-1 with FC Viktoria Plzeň on Thursday in the Czech Republic, in the seventh matchday of the Europa League group stage. After “a difficult match” in which the Dragons did not have “enough composure in the opponent's midfield,” Jan Bednarek stressed that the team must “learn from mistakes” and offered words of support to Samu, who missed a penalty: “As a team, we are here for Samu to stay strong, but I don't think we should give too much importance to what happened. We have many games ahead of us and we will need our best Samu. Everyone will help him, but he is a grown man and this will make him stronger.”
Giving our best was only worth one point
“It was a difficult match for us and we could have controlled the game better playing against 10 men, especially in the second half. We should have been more fluid in our plays, we weren't calm enough in the opponent's midfield. They fought and defended as best they could, but in many moments the referee was arrogant and I don't think that's right. Still, it was our fault for not scoring the second goal. We gave our best, but today it wasn't enough.”
Playing against an outnumbered team
“We didn't have the pace we should have had in the game, we had to show more quality and more composure. We are a young team, we have a lot of young players, and playing against 10 was a new experience for us. I think we learned something from this game. We should have won today, but we have to learn from our mistakes.”
Everyone with Samu
“His reaction at the end to the missed penalty shows his ambition and how much he cares about FC Porto, the team, and scoring goals. There are ups and downs during a career, but I try to help him with my experience. A bad game doesn't make you the worst in the world, and a good game doesn't make you the best in the world. You have to find a balance and stay calm. As a team, we are here for Samu to stay strong, but I don't think we should give too much importance to what happened. We have many games ahead of us and we will need our best Samu. Everyone will help him, but he is a grown man and this will make him stronger.”
