FC Porto beat Gil Vicente 3-0 on a stormy night in Porto
Under heavy rain and raging wind, capable of blowing everything away - except the three points -, FC Porto beat Gil Vicente (3-0) at home and maintained the lead over the rivals from Lisbon. In matchday 19, the Dragons have 18 wins, one tie, 40 goals scored, four conceded, 15 clean sheets, and 55 points out of a possible 57—seven more than Sporting (48) and ten more than Benfica (45).
With only two training sessions since the tie in Plzeň (1-1), Thiago Silva, Gabri Veiga, and Pepê started in the places occupied by Alberto Costa, Rodrigo Mora, and William Gomes in the Europa League, and it was at the feet of the number 10 that the first opportunity came: Gabri recovered, Borja Sainz drove forward and shot wide after just three minutes.
In the 12th minute, following a 100% Spanish combination between Samu, Gabri, and Borja, the winger even found the back of the net, but the assistant referee was quick to flag the offside, and Gil Vicente began to grow, forcing Diogo Costa to a couple of safe saves to keep the score at 0-0.
Between the 30th and 34th minutes, there was no shortage of action inside the visiting area. First, Zé Carlos took the ball away from Samu after excellent work by the Spanish international. Then, Gabri Veiga received the ball from his countryman and did everything right except finish. Finally, the midfielder took a dangerous corner kick and the striker was fouled in the box. Called to the penalty spot—from where he had missed in Guimarães and the Czech Republic—Samu did not hesitate and opened the scoreboard with a penalty kick (1-0).
In the second half, just after the hour mark, Rodrigo Mora and William Gomes replaced Gabri Veiga and Borja Sainz. Shortly after, Luís Esteves saw his free kick denied by the crossbar, and the newly entered Martín Fernández was shown a straight red card for a dangerous tackle on Thiago Silva.
In the final stages of the match, after Jan Bednarek recovered the ball, William and Mora combined, the Portuguese midfielder set up Victor Froholdt, and the Dane narrowly missed the target. The best moment of the night came in the 75th minute, when Pepê passed to Martim Fernandes and the defender shot from outside the box into the back of the net, scoring his first goal for FC Porto's first team (and what a goal it was).
With the score at 2-0, Francesco Farioli brought on Oskar Pietuszewski for his debut at Estádio do Dragão, together with Deniz Gül, while Pablo Rosario came close to adding his name to the scoresheet. Near the final whistle, Eustáquio replaced Froholdt, and William Gomes picked up the ball in the midfield, ran with it, and beat Daniel Figueiras (3-0). On the other side, Diogo Costa shone twice and secured another clean sheet.
