FC Porto faced Nottingham Forest (1-0) in the Europa League quarter-finals
Down to ten men after just seven minutes, FC Porto conceded a 1-0 defeat in Nottingham and saw their Europa League campaign come to an end. The focus now turns to the Portuguese league and the home match against CD Tondela, scheduled for 20h30 on Sunday at Estádio do Dragão for Matchday 30.
Francesco Farioli made six changes to the starting eleven that faced Estoril – and one from the first leg of the round – bringing in Thiago Silva, Pablo Rosario, Seko Fofana, William Gomes, Borja Sainz and Terem Moffi from the start, and the Nigerian forward had the first chance to score at the City Ground: Alberto Costa picked up a rebound from a long ball played to William Gomes and laid it off to Moffi, who tried to chip it over Ortega, but the Spanish goalkeeper saved it before William Gomes shot over.
Jan Bednarek was shown a straight red card after seven minutes following a challenge on Chris Wood, and Nottingham Forest, now with a numerical advantage, opened the scoring thanks to a shot from Morgan Gibbs-White that deflected off Pablo Rosario. Playing in England with a man down, the Dragons tried to breach the British defence through Zaidu and Alberto Costa in stoppage time, but went into the dressing room losing 1-0.
Jakub Kiwior, Francisco Moura, Alan Varela and Victor Froholdt came on at the start of the second half, replacing Alberto Costa, Zaidu, Gabri Veiga and Victor Froholdt, and watched closely as William Gomes was fouled by Nicolás Domínguez and took the free-kick from the edge of the box, hitting the wall (46 mins). After Diogo Costa saved an attempt by Igor Jesus, the blue and white number 7 was once again called to action, but this time hit the bar with a powerful shot following a cross from Seko Fofana (57 mins).
Deniz Gül replaced Terem Moffi in the 65th minute, Fofana took a powerful shot from inside the box, but the ball went wide (79 mins), and Alan Varela hit the bar with power, in a shot from the edge of the box (83 mins), but the score remained unchanged until Dutch referee Danny Makkelie signalled the end of the match.
