FC Porto faced AFS on matchday 33 of the league (3-1)
Eight days after securing their 31st national title, FC Porto conceded a defeat at AFS’s home (3-1) on matchday 33, the penultimate of the League. With this result, the National Champions can no longer match the points record set in 2021/22 (91).
Francesco Farioli made eight changes to the starting eleven and the match kicked off with two moments of great sportsmanship: a tribute to Jorge Costa – legendary FC Porto captain and former AFS coach – and a guard of honour from the home players for the new National Champions.
The first of FC Porto’s several chances in the opening half came as early as the fourth minute, when Borja Sainz appeared at the far post and shot over with his left foot. In the 23rd minute, on the first time they reach the goal defended by Cláudio Ramos, Roni capitalized from a corner to open the scoring at Vila das Aves (1-0).
Settled in the opposition’s half, the Dragons stepped up the pace and came very close to equalising on two occasions before half time: first through Seko Fofana and then through Borja Sainz – in both instances, the defenders’ timely clearances, acting as makeshift goalkeepers, proved crucial.
Rodrigo Mora hit the side net shortly after the restart, and Deniz Gül levelled the score moments later, following a superb pass from Dominik Prpić and a delicate chip from Borja Sainz (1-1). With their second shot of the game, AFS scored their second goal (2-1), forcing Francesco Farioli to make changes, taking off Fofana and Borja and bringing on Victor Froholdt and William Gomes.
In the 63rd minute, Francisco Moura broke forward and set up Gül perfectly, but the Turkish international headed straight at Adriel, who once again shone to deny Alberto Costa’s attempt in the following attack. With Tiago Silva making his debut and Oskar Pietuszewski having come on for Alan Varela and Pepê, William Gomes had a goal ruled out for offside by a teammate, and the home side extended their lead through Aderllan Santos (3-1). Before referee Carlos Macedo blew the final whistle, there was still time for Gabri Veiga to replace Rodrigo Mora and for Prpić to receive his second yellow card, being sent-off.
