Sérgio Conceição praised the blue and White season after winning the Portuguese Cup, but regretted losing the championship
The coach with the most titles in the history of FC Porto led the club to another victory in the Portuguese Cup, the 19th in the club’s history. After the final at Estádio do Jamor, Sérgio Conceição talked of a clearly superior team during the 90 minutes, that allowed "nothing to the opponent". After a season in which FC Porto won the Super Cup, the League Cup and the Portuguese Cup, the coach admitted the moment is "bittersweet" as the League is missing in this list. "I want to leave a word to the fans, who were fantastic from start to finish, always very dedicated and passionate. They deeply identify with this team and it’s bittersweet for me", Sérgio Conceição stated.
A final dominated by FC Porto
"I'm happy to end the season in the best way. A word for SC Braga, who had a great path in the Cup, but also in the championship and in Europe, which adds value to this final and to the way we played. It was pretty much a one-way game, we did well on the defence. We were far better. Even playing with 10 men, we had the game under control. It was one of the best games I had as coach of FC Porto, no doubt. SC Braga has a lot of capacity and a lot of quality and today we didn’t allow anything to them. We were true to ourselves and everyone had to give it all."
The Blue Sea
"A word to the fans, who were fantastic from start to finish, always dedicated and very passionate. They deeply identify with this team and it’s bittersweet for me. Had we always been this competitive at some moments in the season, especially in games when we were not true to ourselves, we would be here celebrating the fourth trophy of the season. Had we always been this competitive, it would have been four out of four titles. When I said that we are the best team, I don't want to take credit from Benfica and the work they have done. We couldn't win all four trophies, but we'll try next year. Knowing the club well, I know the fans are happy and pleased, even though we didn't win the championship."
Portuguese reality
"Portuguese clubs have a hard time retaining players. It is our reality, because we are in a championship that does not have the financial power of others. The good players in our league always end up leaving, which makes it difficult for coaches to do their job. This season, Portuguese teams have given a fantastic image in Europe, but we do not have the same economic power as others. If we retained the same players for three or four years, we would also have a word in Europe."
