FC Porto beat Atlético Madrid on a day of presentations, surprises and tributes (1-0)
FC Porto beat Atlético Madrid 1-0 at home in the presentation match for members and fans. On a day of strong emotions at Estádio do Dragão, during which the Porto family was surprised by the arrival of Luuk de Jong and paid tribute to brothers Diogo Jota and André Silva, Victor Froholdt took the leading role and scored the only goal of the afternoon.
Paulo Futre and Radamel Falcao kicked off a classic European football match and Jan Bednarek made his debut in blue and white. The Spanish team was the first to create danger, but Gabri Veiga and Borja Sainz were quick to respond to their countrymen, and Pepê could also have scored after a beautiful run by Victor Froholdt, who continues to impress the fans.
Sainz came close to opening the scoreboard after an excellent cross from Veiga, and, after Julián Álvarez hit the top bar with a great shot, Froholdt and Pepê combined again, this time successfully: as if they had been playing together for years, the Danish and the Brazilian internationals created a perfect triangle and the number 8 gave Oblak no chance (1-0).
Dominik Prpic and Zaidu replaced Bednarek and Martim Fernandes at the start of the second half, Pepê again came close to scoring, and Samu came even closer with a header following a corner kick. Shortly after a powerful long-range shot from Varela that almost hit the top bar, Francesco Farioli changed half the team and sent in Zé Pedro, Marko Grujic, Eustáquio, William Gomes and Rodrigo Mora to replace Nehuén Pérez, Alberto Costa, Froholdt, Gabri Veiga and Borja Sainz.
Fresh off the bench, Mora dribbled past several opponents he met and almost brought the crowd to its feet with a moment of genius, before Danny Namaso and Deniz Gül replaced Pepê and Samu, with David Silva, shortly after, signalling the end of the match and victory for the Dragons. The doors of the blue and white stage will reopen next Saturday for the League opener against Vitória SC (20h30, Sport TV).
