FC Porto beat Vitória SC (3-0) in the first matchday of the League

FC Porto beat Vitória SC 3-0 at home in the opening matchday of the Portuguese League. In the first game after Jorge Costa's passing, Estádio do Dragão was packed to pay tribute to the Captain and celebrate Porto's victory with one goal from Pepê and two from Samu.

Francesco Farioli repeated the starting eleven that faced Atlético Madrid and saw the team from Guimarães create danger after just 30 seconds, but Tiago Silva lacked accuracy. The Dragons' response was swift and came 12 minutes in, in a quick counterattack led and finished brilliantly by Pepê (1-0). The goal didn’t soothe the blue and white flame, quite the contrary.

After a free kick by Gabri Veiga, the ball went centimetres outside the post of the South goal, and, soon after, Victor Froholdt narrowly missed the target following a recovery in the attack - a trademark of the Italian coach sitting on the home bench. After allowing Charles to make a good save, Samu followed up perfectly on an excellent cross from Alberto Costa and doubled the lead with a header (2-0).

Leading 2-0, the Spanish international forward never lost his hunger for goals and came close to scoring his second in consecutive attacks - first he shot over the bar and then found himself one-on-one with the visiting goalkeeper. The visitors still managed to mount a response, but Diogo Costa and Jan Bednarek stopped all attempts in the final stages of the first half.

Borja Sainz forced Charles to work hard at the start of the second half, Alan Varela was less accurate, and Farioli made a triple substitution, sending in Dominik Prpic, Eustáquio, and William Gomes in place of Bednarek, Veiga, and Sainz. Samu went in search of his second goal 74 minutes in and got it in the 79th, following up on a powerful long-range shot from Eustáquio.

The next chance came from Pepê and went through Froholdt, Varela continued to try from distance and Luuk de Jong made his debut in blue and white in the final moments of a match that had long been decided. Next up is a trip to Barcelos on Monday (20h15, Sport TV).
