Alan Varela says the Dragons are “saddened by the result” after their defeat against Nottingham Forest (2-0)
After two wins in the first two matchdays, FC Porto conceded their first defeat in the Europa League group stage on Thursday, losing to Nottingham Forest (2-0) at City Ground in the third matchday of the competition. Alan Varela was one of the group's spokesmen after the match and felt that “we played on equal terms at times” against a team that “plays in the best league in the world”. “Today we conceded a defeat, but now we have to quickly change our mindset and think about the league game”, the Argentinian midfielder added, referring to the trip to Moreira de Cónegos (Monday, 20h00).
A summary of the game
“We knew it was going to be a difficult game, we faced a team that plays in the best league in the world, but at times we were up to the task. The game was decided by details. We are sad about the result, but we feel that we played on equal terms at times.”
A shot that had the hallmarks of a goal
“It doesn't matter who scores the goals, the team always plays to win. It doesn't matter if it's me or another teammate who scores.”
All results are lessons
“You always learn from victories and defeats. Today we conceded a defeat, but now we have to quickly change our mindset and think about the league game.”
The tireless support of the fans
“The fans have been truly incredible, supporting us at every ground we play at. They are making a huge effort and that is another reason why we are sad; we wanted to give them the victory. We hope they continue to support us in the next game and we will do everything we can to live up to this club.”
