William Gomes scored the winning goal in FC Porto-Estoril (1-0) and was voted MVP of the Portuguese League

It was far from easy, but FC Porto beat Estoril (1-0) on Sunday at Estádio do Dragão, maintaining their lead in the league with a three-point lead over Sporting. William Gomes, the scorer of the only goal of the night and the Liga Portugal MVP, gave credit to the opponent, “a good team”, before explaining that the play that decided the match “is the result of work in training” and the insistence of Francesco Farioli, who “always asks to start the game at high intensity and pressing”.

The winger also said he is willing to “play in any position”, asked for the fans' support because “there are many games in December” and they “give us a lot of strength”, and revealed that he saw himself in the young fan he hugged during the celebrations: “When I saw the happiness of that young fan and his eyes shining, I remembered when I was a kid and was happy when my team scored. I went to celebrate with him and I was very happy”.

A sweet victory
“We knew it was going to be a difficult game, but we prepared well during the week. Estoril is a good team, but we did what the coach asked us to do, we scored a goal early on, we had chances to score more and we didn't manage to, but then we knew how to hold on to the result. The most important thing is that we won.”

The goal
“The coach always asks me to start the game at high intensity and to press, I saw a good opportunity to press and I was happy to score the goal.”

The celebration
“When I saw the happiness of that young fan and his eyes shining, I remembered when I was a kid and was happy when my team scored. I went to celebrate with him and I was very happy.”

Practice makes perfect
“It's all the result of hard work in training. Dave Vos and Callum Walsh work hard with me and I was happy today.”

Willing to perform in any position
“In football, you have to adapt to any position. In training, I played a lot on the left, but I actually preferred playing on the right, and in pre-season I worked hard and wanted to play on the right. I talked to the manager, he understood that I could perform better on the right, but I've played quite a few times on the left. I can play in any position.”

The Golden Dragons
“It’s the first time I’ll be at the Golden Dragons gala and I’m really looking forward to seeing what it will be like.”

The appeal to the fans
“We have a lot of games in December and we need the fans, who give us a lot of strength and are very important. We really need them.”
