FC Porto sealed their 31st league title with a 1-0 win over FC Alverca

“Porto, Porto, Porto, you are our glory, give us on this day another joy, another victory”! FC Porto have written yet another golden chapter in their unrivalled history of success, securing the 31st league title in their history at Estádio do Dragão, courtesy of a 1-0 win over FC Alverca, a result that once again confirms them as the most decorated club in Portuguese football with 87 official trophies.

On matchday 32, Francesco Farioli’s side move onto 85 points and continue to chase the all-time club record of 91 points, set by FC Porto themselves in the 2021/22 season.

The 49,561 fans in attendance could have started celebrating early when Gabri Veiga saw the post deny him a goal from a direct corner kick after just 12m. On 24m, following another corner, Victor Froholdt hit the bar, and Jakub Kiwior scored from the spare, but the goal was ruled out for handball by the Polish international.

The breakthrough finally arrived just before half-time: from yet another superb corner taken by Gabri Veiga, this time from the right, Jan Bednarek jumped above everyone else at the far post and powered a header into the net, allowing the blue and white fans inside and outside the stadium to start celebrating (1–0).

Martim Fernandes and Alan Varela replaced Jakub Kiwior and Zaidu at the break, while Gabri Veiga continued to pull the strings and set up Deniz Gül, who was denied of the goal by the opposing goalkeeper on the hour mark. Shortly after coming on for Oskar Pietuszewski, Borja Sainz had a chance to double the lead following excellent work, and an even better cross, from Alberto Costa, but his header was straight at Matheus Mendes.

The stands got on their feet to applaud Gabri Veiga as he made way for Seko Fofana, and again when Rodrigo Mora came on for Pepê. Amid fireworks and chants of “the champion is back,” the players kept their focus, and FC Porto secured a title that was as deserved as it was long-awaited. It will be a night of celebrations in Porto and wherever fans of the newly crowned champions are to be found.
